Ever noticed the paving under your feet is laid in different patterns? It isn’t decoration — it’s engineering. Herringbone locks every block against its neighbours with no continuous joint, so braking and turning loads spread out instead of pushing blocks apart; vehicle crossings, car parks and bus stops use it. Stretcher bond is quicker to lay and fine for footpaths, but its straight joints creep under traffic. Basketweave is decorative only. Bonus: the red strip across a footpath is a vehicle run-in — and it’s almost always herringbone.
