What is “ma shek”? Is it the same as granite?
Yes. 麻石 (ma shek) is the everyday Cantonese name for granite (花崗岩), so called because of the speckled “sesame” pattern of its mineral grains. Granite forms when magma cools slowly underground; it is composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and mica, and is hard, very low in water absorption and highly resistant to abrasion and weathering. From Hong Kong’s historic stone houses, piers and drainage channels to today’s parks, plazas, footpaths and road kerbs, granite is everywhere in the city.
Why Hong Kong projects specify natural granite
- Footpaths, parks and plazas — flamed or bush-hammered granite paving is slip-resistant and hard-wearing; under normal use it wears rather than cracks and holds its colour for decades.
- Road kerbs and edgings — granite kerbs resist impact far better than precast concrete and are common along carriageways, roundabouts and waterfront promenades.
- Planters, retaining walls and facades — natural-split granite gives a rugged quarried look; polished granite is used on building facades and lobby walls.
- Steps, copings and benches — thick slabs and special shapes are cut to drawings.

Colours: 25 standard granite colours
Typical colours include white with black speckle, a range of light to dark greys, black, light yellow, orange-yellow, red, pink, light brown and dark green, each available in any finish. Because granite is a natural mineral, colour and grain vary slightly from piece to piece and between batches — this is a normal characteristic of natural stone. We recommend approving a sample before ordering. See our article Why does natural granite vary in colour?

Natural granite prices in Hong Kong
Natural granite paving typically costs from three to four figures (HKD) per square metre, depending on colour, finish, thickness, size, quantity and delivery location. Granite is quarried in large blocks, sawn, and then surface-finished by machine or by hand — a different process from artificial granite, which is why the unit price is higher. In return it offers greater durability and slip resistance, a long service life outdoors and lower long-term maintenance. Send us your drawings, BQ or specification and we will list what we can supply with a formal quotation.
Minimum order, lead time and tolerances
- Minimum order: 50 m² per colour and size for paving (kerbs are priced per piece; some profiles are held in stock).
- Lead time: custom sizes approx. 45–55 working days after payment; delivery by large lorry to site kerbside only, no secondary handling.
- Dimensional tolerance: natural granite is cut from natural stone by hand or machine, so length, width and thickness carry an approx. 2–3 mm tolerance. This is normal for natural stone and does not constitute grounds for return, exchange or refund.
- Colour variation: natural stone colour may vary between batches; sample confirmation is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
What are the drawbacks of granite?
Weight (30 mm slabs are roughly 80 kg/m²), a higher unit price than artificial stone, natural colour variation, and polished finishes becoming slippery when wet, so they are not used on exterior floors. With the right finish and thickness, granite remains one of the most durable and slip-resistant exterior paving materials available.
Is granite radioactive? Is it safe?
All natural rock contains trace natural radioactive elements. Building granite is generally at normal background levels and complies with building-material radioactivity standards; it is used in public buildings and footpaths worldwide. Documentation can be provided on request where a project requires it.
How much does granite paving cost per square metre?
Typically three to four figures (HKD) per m², depending on colour, finish, thickness and quantity. Send your specification for a formal quotation.
Which is more slip-resistant, flamed or bush hammered?
Both meet exterior floor requirements. Bush hammered has a deeper texture and the highest slip resistance, suited to ramps and wet areas; flamed is smoother underfoot and easier to clean, and is the most common finish for parks, plazas and footpaths.
Can sizes be cut to drawings? What is the minimum order?
Yes — 100–2800 mm in length/width and 8–100 mm thick. Minimum order is 50 m² per colour and size.
Does Tai Fong install?
No. We supply materials only; installation is arranged by the contractor.
